Theory of music is part of all NCM piano and singing lessons. But most of our students call it Sofa Time because it is an opportunity to leave the piano or take the weight off our feet and learn theory in a relaxed way, sitting on the sofa!

By removing the traditional stigma of theory being ‘boring’ and utilising interactive apps and games as well as traditional learning materials, our students actually enjoy their sofa time. 

Although we don’t enter students for formal exams, they are regularly assessed in lesson time and are rewarded for their achievements.

During the 2020 lockdown, we had online sofa time zoom groups which proved to be very popular. This is something we hope to recreate in person later in 2021, giving our students the chance to learn in a fun, informal and social environment.
